Halloween: one of the most popular holidays in the US. Whether you choose to go out, or stay in and eat candy you are guaranteed a good night. Besides trick or treating, dressing up, and decorating your house in festive decor, one thing is for certain: If you enjoy Halloween, there are a plethora of movies that you should watch this spooky season. Here are five different films that anyone can enjoy, whether you’re looking for a quick scare or just a laugh.
Number 5: Monsters Inc.
Ever wonder about the monsters in your closet and under your bed? This movie is the perfect way to find out why they are there in the first place. Many will claim that this is not a Halloween movie, and although it may not scare you into oblivion, it is certainly a Halloween movie. People all around the world celebrate Halloween in many different ways, and some just don’t like the feeling of being scared; They just appreciate the nostalgia of the holiday, and a fun laugh. Monsters Inc. is a great example of a Halloween movie that is a fun comedy that will provide that nostalgic feeling. Telling the story of Mike and Sully, this fun movie is all about monsters and how they live on a daily basis. So now think: the monsters in your closet and under your beds, are they still there?
Number 4: Young Frankenstein (1974)
Young Frankenstein was written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, and it is an absolute classic. Young Frankenstein can be watched all year-round, but many will save it for Halloween just for the feelings of the season. Frankenstein’s monster is a well-known character in horror, while the famed green monster with screws in his neck may not be book accurate, fans do not seem to care, as they just embrace the campy interpretation of it. Young Frankenstein is the story of Frankenstein’s grandson who tells everyone to pronounce his last name as “Fronkensteen” for he wants nothing he owns to be associated with Victor Frankenstein. It is a silly reimagination of the classic story, keeping the original monster with little added quirks to make this funny movie unique.
Number 3: The Addams Family (1991)
While there were three Addams Family movies made, many fans will agree that the first is the best. The Addams family is a family that loves each other very dearly, but in a way that many would call weird. The Addams family consists of mother Morticia, father Gomez, and their two children Wednesday (yes, Wednesday — but not Jenna Ortega) and Pugsley. This movie tells the story of the Addams family, when a man who claims to be their Uncle Fester tries entering their life. Gomez instantly accepts his “brother” into the family, but Morticia is a little unsure. While Fester makes his way into the family, Morticia has to find out if Fester is actually the family’s uncle, or they could lose their home, and everything they hold dear.
Number 2: Nightmare Before Christmas
Although this movie can be argued to be a Christmas movie, many will opt to watch the film this October– and rightfully so. Made in 1993, this Tim Burton classic was made with all stop-motion. It took 18 months to complete the project, and any fan can see just how impressive the project is. This musical has many popular songs such as “This Is Halloween,” “What’s This?” and “Oogie Boogie’s Song.” Run by all different creepy monsters, Halloweentown loves creating Halloween every year and having a good scream. While Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween, may be starting to feel that Halloween every year starts to get a little repetitive, no one in Halloween town would agree. Most of the film is about Jack wanting to run Christmas instead of Santa. However, not even Jack Skellington can run too far from his roots, eventually returning to the town and continuing the festivities he loves.
Number 1: Hocus Pocus
No one can mention Halloween movies and not think of Hocus Pocus. Just having its 30th anniversary, this movie has stood the test of time. Everyone has fallen in love with the three witches of Salem and their story. This movie tells the story of Max, his little sister Dani, and their friend Allison as they wake three evil witches by mistake. While they try to fix their mistake as fast as they can, the three witches are trying to make sure that Max, Dani, and Allison fail. If they fail, the three witches will become immortal, which would leave three children-eating witches on the loose indefinitely. With no one to help them, Max, Dani, and Allison must stick together if they want to save Salem and all the children who live there.
Some honorable mentions include It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Scream, Halloween, Halloween Town, Twitches, Casper, Little Shop Of Horrors, and Coraline.
