Eternity is a story following Joan Cutler, a woman who has recently passed away and now has to choose which of her lovers to spend her afterlife with. The movie conveys the importance of memories, following your heart, and the difference between commitment and young love.
Before choosing which eternity Joan would spend her afterlife in, she has to confront her two lovers. Luke, played by Callumn Turner, was Joan’s first love, who died fighting in the Korean War. He represented the youthful and exhilarating love Joan experienced.
Larry, played by Miles Teller, was Joan’s second love and the man she spent the rest of her life with. With Larry, Joan had children and grandchildren and got to experience the ups and downs of a committed relationship.
Before she must choose between Luke and Larry, they each spend a day with her to remind her of what could have been and what could continue to be. The mountains where she visits with Luke reflect the young love the two shared, with events like skiing, mountain climbing, and high-adrenaline-seeking adventures. However, Larry takes Joan to the beach, a warm, relaxing place that represents a calm and settled relationship. The beach is a warm reminder of the relationship Larry and Joan shared and the safety of that relationship.
Cool and warm colors, along with a blend of ambient and orchestral music. were used to add emotion to each scene. Funny scenes held more reds and oranges, while sad scenes were pale blue and silver. Despite all the emotion and heavy life choices, the movie is a cute romance filled with comedy and real-life issues.
The movie is one hour and 54 minutes long, filled with comedic lines and tearjerking stories. It does an excellent job of diving into different relationships and how each one will be different. It is an emotional rollercoaster that will have you reflecting on your own relationships when you walk out of the theater.
Eternity will remain in theaters until early January 2026. Afterwards, you can find the film on Apple TV and Prime Video. It is another great movie under Elizabeth Olsen’s belt. If you loved her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you will adore her in this romance film.
