Enola Holmes was directed by Harry Bradbeer and based on the book series by Nancy Springer. The film was released on September 23, 2020. The story introduces a 16 year old girl named Enola Holmes who is played by Millie Bobby Brown. Enola talks about her past, including how her father passed shortly after she was born and how her older brothers, Mycroft played by Sam Claflin and Sherlock played by Henry Cavill, left home when she was young. This left Enola to grow up with her mother Eudoria, played by Helena Bonham Carter.
She talks about how her mother chose her name because Enola backwards is alone, even though her mother never left her alone. On Enola’s 16th birthday, she wakes up to find her mother missing. Her brothers return home and Mycroft insists Enola attend a finishing school. Enola leaves and goes to find her mother. Along the way, she meets Viscount Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge. Enola uses her detective skills to find her mother all while avoiding people who want her dead, as well as her brothers. She gets tangled with a political conspiracy, and often speaks directly to the audience by breaking the fourth wall.
Enola Holmes is a mystery, adventure, action, drama, crime, and thriller genres. The film takes place in 1884 and is a PG-13 rating. The tone feels witty, adventurous, and thrilling which helps keep the story engaging for the audience. This movie is incredible with amazing visuals, an engaging plot, and memorable characters. The story highlights the themes of independence, empowerment, and personal choice. Enola’s growth shows how taking control of your own future matters.
The movie also shows some weaknesses. Parts of the plot feel predictable, and the romance between Enola Holmes and Viscount Tewkesbury lacks chemistry. Some critics talk about the portrayal of Mycroft Holmes, along with the constant fourth wall breaks, which can get distracting for the story.
Overall, Enola Holmes is an incredible film that delivers an entertaining and meaningful story with a strong lead performance. I would give this movie a 5/5 because I really enjoyed watching it. If you enjoy action-adventure stories, mystery and detective narratives, or are just a fan of Millie Bobby Brown, then you will definitely enjoy this film.
