As the holiday break has ended, so has the season of gift giving and receiving. The Knight Times has compiled a list that represents some of the top presents Nanuet students have received over break: ranging from coal to FritoLays bean dip. Some of the most popular presents included:
- AirPods
- Blankets
- Candles
- Clothes
- New phones
- Uggs
- Shoes
America’s Shopping Trends
The trends continue outside of Nanuet, as well. According to USA Today, the most popular gifts included food, candy, clothes, clothing, and gift cards. Statista reported that a holiday shopping survey showed that 59% of Americans were planning to buy clothes, while gift cards came at 55%. Electronics and toys followed close behind with 35 and 34 percent, respectively.
However, an unfortunate outcome was also observed this year, by WalletHub’s 2023 holiday shopping survey. They reported that about 34% of respondents chose to skip gift-giving because of financial pressures. Nearly 25% of respondents reported that they still had lingering debt from the 2022 holiday season. Because of this, it’s no surprise that some people opt to spend the holidays with family making memories instead. After all, experiences are worth far more and last longer than tangible gifts.
The TikTok Shop
TikTok is ever-changing, and one of the app’s most recent additions is the TikTok Shop. This feature allows creators and sellers to showcase and sell their products. During the holiday season, 150,000 creators put out products on their TikTok Shop, and a whopping 5 million users bought these products for the holidays.
Online Spending
According to Statista, holiday online retail sales in the United States hit $254 billion, with the peak spending occurring on Cyber Monday. This Cyber Monday happened to be the biggest online shopping day in history, with revenue figures reaching 12 billion dollars.
All in all, we saw low lows and high highs for the 2023 holiday season. A lot of people couldn’t afford to shop at others, while others contributed to this being the biggest Cyber Monday of all time. Due to these strange findings, one can only guess what’s coming in 2024!
