Parents every day shiver as their teenager walks out the door to brave the bone-chilling weather, armed with nothing but a hoodie. The Knight Times is on a mission to answer, for once and for all, the seemingly ludicrous question that stumps parents winter after winter: why do teenagers refuse to wear jackets?
The answer is simpler than you might think: ease.
Over 75% of people interviewed report that they do not wear a coat to school, and just being in the building affirms this statistic. It is a rare phenomenon to spot a coat walking from the buses, or even the top lot: students tend to substitute with a mere hoodie.
“I usually only wear a coat to school if my mom makes me because it’s really cold,” Junior Autumn Calvello laments. “Bringing a heavy coat to school is just a really big hassle especially since I don’t use my locker.”
“Outside of school again I usually only wear it if it’s really cold or if my mom makes me,” Calvello continues. “Or because my dad makes me worry because he says, ‘what if we break down in the middle of nowhere. I’m not giving you my jacket.’”
“I just don’t wanna carry around a jacket the rest of the day at school, I’ll just wear a sweatshirt,” Hannelore Rydqvist claims. “But for like walking to a car, building, et cetera,. I’ll really only wear one if it’s below freezing outside.”
Again, it’s really about not wanting to carry around the jacket.” Rydqvist emphasizes.
“Jackets are bulky and heavy and I don’t wear them inside but it feels awkward to be walking around carrying a jacket,” Tabi Skop-Rodriguez, a freshman, agrees. “Also I don’t get cold too easy so the most I’ll where is a hoodie and vest or a fleece and be perfectly warm. I also just don’t like the way they feel on me.”
