Welcome back Knights!
After a record-breaking sixteen days off from school, Nanuet Senior High School is back to finish their second quarter and start off the new year. But before we go on with our classes and back into the hang of things, let’s recap the break at Nanuet and talk a little about what high schoolers at our own school did during the break.
Some celebrated holidays with friends and family, keeping up with longstanding family traditions.
“I’m probably gonna go to Brooklyn,” says Kwora Chen, a sophomore at Nanuet. “I’ll go chill with my family, maybe eat some traditional Chinese food and steal some recipes from my grandparents – We celebrate Chinese New Years with the New Year as well so I’ll go down to Brooklyn (twice).”
I personally celebrated a cultural event too, ringing in the New year with Haitian Independence Day and eating as much soup Joumou as I could.
Some students spent their break training, competing in their sports or going to practice during the break.
Senior John Parisi says he spent the break going to wrestling tournaments.
Like many others on the track team, Sophomore Ayaan Ali also ran and competed over the break, stating that he would be “focusing on track.”
Leann Boh shared that she had a similar experience.
“Over break, I’ll be going to practice every day. I might have a few meets and go to the city with my family,” said the sophomore Track Team member.
Almost every student enjoyed their time off, sleeping in and getting well rested before a fresh new start.
Still, many students complained that this break was disorienting.
“The break was so long it felt like summer vacation,” said Senior Leila Miller.“[When school came back] it felt too soon and almost too real.”
But what can all be agreed upon is that this sixteen-day break, a break with a length that has not been seen in what feels like years, was well needed.
“It’s never happened before,” said Sophomore Ayaan Ali. “I really like this new change. It’s longer so we do not have to go back to school Monday and Tuesday.”
Let’s make a resolution to all start 2026 with positive energy.
