School is back in session, and the Nanuet Knights did not waste any time getting back to school spirit! Rather than one spirit week following the week off for President’s Day in February, the student council decided to implement a homecoming spirit week, ending with a Friday night homecoming football game and Saturday night homecoming dance.
Flyers detailing the theme days were distributed the Friday before at the club fair: Adam Sandler Day on Monday, Country Club Day on Tuesday, Barbie and Ken Day on Wednesday, Black and Gold Day on Thursday, and White-Out (wear white) on Friday.
Thursday’s festivities involved a modified bell schedule with shortened periods, to accommodate for a pep rally during the last hour of the school day on the football field.
Proud knights were very excited about this new spirit week, including Senior and Cheer Captain, Chloe Mirasol.
“I think that spirit week is a great way to kick off the school year,” she said. “And I think it’s fun that we’re doing something new.”
The theme days were unlike any previous year, with oversized t-shirts and basketball shorts for Adam Sandler Day, preppy attire for Country Club Day, and, of course, a plethora of pink for Barbie and Ken Day.
Adam Sandler day was popular among students and teachers, especially chemistry teacher Mr. Pepe.
“I was a big fan of Adam Sandler movies growing up, so, I’m a fan of Adam Sandler Day,” he said. “I forgot today was Adam Sandler day, so I missed today, but tomorrow is Country Club Day, so I guess I’ll just wear a normal golf shirt that I have. I should be able to accomplish [dressing up for] most days.”
Art teacher Ms. Tidd shared this sentiment, claiming Adam Sandler day as her favorite of all the theme days.
“I gotta love the Adam Sandler [day],” she said. “I just love the vibe, I feel like we all feel comfortable, and it’s kinda silly.”
Ms. Tidd went on to express her excitement for the rest of the week.
“I am absolutely pumped,” she said. “I have the best skirt for Art Teacher Barbie on Wednesday.”
While some students enjoyed the idea of the homecoming spirit week, some felt it fell short in execution, such as Sophomore Erik Rydqvist.
“I don’t [like spirit week] because it’s always last minute when we get the list and I don’t have time to go shopping,” he said. “[If I could change it, I would] put the list out sooner, less expensive homecoming tickets, and better themes for the days.”
Nonetheless, homecoming week is a very important time for Nanuet athletes and physical education staff. PE teacher Ms. Scerba felt spirit week was a great idea, at an even better time.
“I’m very excited for spirit week,” she said. “I think it’s a great way to build school culture. We unite as a team—everybody from freshman to seniors—we highlight our athletes, and just boost our morale.”
