It is an indisputable fact that educators are what make or break a class for many students. Luckily, we have wonderful staff at our school and every year, we continue to introduce more. One of these very special additions is Ms. Roisin Ross, a new addition to Nanuet High School’s English Department this year.
Ms. Ross had always thought of teaching, so it comes as no surprise that she chose to join the education program at SUNY Cortland. Despite some hesitance in picking a major, she was confident in her final decision.
After deciding to major in Adolescent Education: English, she student-taught at Pearl River Middle School before graduating in December of 2022. Now, she has started her Master’s in Literacy Education. Being a Nanuet alumni, Ms. Ross returned to Nanuet High School to teach English.
“To be back in the same halls is strange, but also super exciting,” said Ms. Ross. “It seems that Nanuet is warmly familiar as things like ‘muffin days’ and Spirit Week are still sources of excitement for the student body.”
Regarding teaching, Ms. Ross says that it’s amazing helping students learn something new.
“Since being a teacher, I’ve found that seeing a concept ‘click’ in a student’s head or having a lesson go really well is a super rewarding feeling.”
Because of that, she tries to create a classroom culture where students feel comfortable, according to her.
“I try my hardest to curate a welcoming environment where they can develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. This includes being open to student feedback and collaboration.”
Outside of school, Ms. Ross enjoys reading among other hobbies.
“Outside of teaching, I spend a lot of my time reading and engaging with reading content online” and she says that she has “always loved reading and writing.”
Not only that, but Ms. Ross is also excited for the warming weather.,
“I’m really looking forward to the weather getting warmer so I can return to my long walks outside,” she said. “It’s been too cold and damp these past few months!”
So, next time that you’re in the hallway and happen to see Ms. Ross, make sure to say hello!
