It’s that time of the school year once again. It’s Students celebrated Homecoming Week meaning many flocked to stores like Windsor and Party City to get dressed up and get decorations. Homecoming is a two in one experience with important sporting events the entire week, all culminating in a dance where everyone can show how hard they’ve been working with a cute dress or clean dress shirt. Today’s focus is on the more competitive part of the week — the sporting events. Although, competing for who has the better dress is very real.
Nanuet High School has seven fall sports including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, football, cheerleading, tennis and cross country. At this point, these sports have had three weeks of prior training and, to prove their hard work, they will each compete against tough teams on our school campus. Each team will decorate their environment with immense levels of black and gold streamers and balloons (shoutout to Michael’s and the Dollar store for making this possible). Students invite their friends and family making the stands seem like an army to visiting schools. The cheers and themed outfits make the events greatly memorable. On the girl’s side, it’s unforgettable to braid each others’ hair before the game and put those black and gold ribbons on a simple scrunchie. On the boys’ side, well, they just put on eye black and get into the mindset of playing hard.
The anxiety of playing a game does not get enough attention. These athletes are the same students who were scholars for the past six hours. Varsity athletes are hardworking students who go above and beyond to enrich their high school experiences. While excelling in academics, they find the energy to excel once again on a court, track, or field. They serve as the Olympians of the high school, often pushing themselves to the physical, and sometimes emotional, limit.. A round of applause to all student-athletes because it is far from easy to accomplish that level of discipline.
Saturday, September 14, a huge crowd rocked red, white, and blue and cheered on as our Varsity Football Team won 21-7 against Sleepy Hollow on our home field! Let’s show some school spirit and support for our community by dressing up in a different color every day this week in preparation for Homecoming! So yes, after all is said and done, a little high school dance is deserved to commend everyone for their work. Of course, this would not be possible without willing teachers and coaches caring enough to improve these young student-athletes’ lives.
It is clear homecoming is far more than just breaking a sweat or going clothes shopping. It is the epitome of balance in high school life. School, work, and play, all equally valued and contributing to the meaning of high school life.
