As we entered into the new school year and welcomed Nanuet Senior High School’s students back, we also welcomed into our school a new teacher: Mrs. Silver! So far, she has taught for six weeks at Nanuet.
While we welcome her as a new teacher, Mrs. Silver is not at all new to this school. She actually attended Nanuet as a teenager and graduated with the class of 1994. Mrs. Silver teaches Nanuet’s Environmental Science classes, as well as Living Environment labs.
As a former student, Mrs. Silver has acknowledged that school life has changed since she attended.
“Things are completely different and [also] the same,” she said. “If you look at the building in general, not much has changed, but other things have. The math wing wasn’t here when I was here last; the science wing is different.”
Although the landscape of the building may have been altered due to renovations over the years, according to Mrs. Silver, “it’s still a small, community-focused school.”
Silver spoke on how she came to be a science teacher, a subject, she said, she has always loved.
“I’ve always loved science,” she says. “The first time I realized I loved science was in 7th grade. My favorite project was our cell notebook. My dad’s a science teacher, and my sister’s a pharmacist. Science runs in the family.”
Before acting on her love for science, however, Silver shares that she worked on Wall Street for ten years before deciding to become a teacher.
“I always wanted to be a teacher,” she said. “I was home with kids for 15 years, but later on I went back to science and wanted to make a positive impact on people.”
She also shared some memories about her time spent at Nanuet. Some of these include graduating Nanuet Senior High School alongside Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus teacher, Mr. Campanella, and graduating from Binghamton University with Physics teacher, Mr. Heraghty.
Since her days as a student, her love for school functions has never wavered, according to Mrs. Silver. So far, she has attended the Homecoming football game and dance, the Brown Jug Game, and both Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer games.
Nanuet athletics hold a special place in her heart. Mrs. Silver herself played both soccer and lacrosse, and can even be seen in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. She is also in the Hall of Fame at Binghamton University for Soccer, remaining their all-time leading scorer.
When asked to share a fun fact about herself, Silver shared that she was the Valedictorian of her graduating class. Her dedication to her community and environment was apparent through her participation in clubs like VAASA.
It is clear to see that both as a student and as an educator, Mrs. Silver is an extremely talented and decorated individual. The Nanuet School Community welcomes her back with open arms.
