For their first Spirit Week, the green-colored Class of 2028 decided on the aquatic theme of “Floating Freshmen.” Adorning their hallway with green-and-white buoys and paper jellyfish, the freshmen also won the academic bowl.
The freshmen felt confident in their hallway-decorating skills after trying their hand at the spirit week tradition.
“I think we did a really good job on the hallway,” commented freshmen Peyton Zarzour. “We picked a good theme.”
Taking over the history and foreign language wing of the second floor, the orange-colored sophomores chose “Safari Sophomores” as their theme this year. A construction-paper tiger hanging above the stairway doors and the paintings of Serengeti sunrises displayed the creativity of the decorators.
“The hallway decorations added a decent flair,” remarked sophomore Jocelyn Conklin.
Conquering the math wing, the blue-hued juniors picked “Jedi Juniors” as their theme. Furnishing their hallway with a hanging Death Star, a Yoda Doll and other Star Wars memorabilia, the juniors were excited with a theme that was truly out of this world.
For their last Spirit Week, the Class of 2025 used a portion of the first floor and set up red streamers, a multitude of candy-themed balloons and even a sugary-sweet car and mini-vending machine to win the hallway decorating competition.
For the first day of spirit week, students kept it cozy with a pajama theme. On Tuesday, students showed off their patriotism with red, white and blue attire and tested their academic and athletic prowess in an academic bowl and relay races.
People enjoyed the daily dress-up themes.
“I like how this year the days were diverse. Last year we had white-out and pink-out,” commented junior Jasmin Bains. “I liked twinning with my friends.”
In the freshman-sophomore competitions, the freshmen defeated the sophomores in the academic bowl and the multi-event relay but came in short in the speed relay.
In the junior-senior competitions, the juniors won the combined egg and spoon, piggyback, sack and three-legged race but lost in a close relay race. The seniors had commanding wins in both the relay race and the academic bowl.
Wednesday and Thursday were twin day and camo day, respectively, with Friday bringing class representation through students wearing their classes shirt or class colors.
According to senior Gabby Vizcarrondo, there was an emotional impact she felt while enjoying her final Spirit Week here at Nanuet High School.
“It’s bittersweet,” she lamented. “It’s sad to know this is the beginning of the end.”
Senior Meghan O’Meara shared that sentiment.
“It’s something I think a lot of people enjoyed and looked forward to,” she said.
As with every spirit week, Nanuet owes a special thanks to our class advisors, who organize decorating and planning and the participating and devoted members of each class. These individuals keep school spirit alive, not just during Spirit Week, but throughout the school year.
